Explanation of the field:
Plant Production Sciences major subject is divided into specialist sections that are Agroecology, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Plant Pathology, Plant Irrigation, Agricultural climatology, Soil and nutrition management in agriculture and Horticulture. Here in the plant production field of study, we provide a syllabus of some general courses about plant pathology, Plant Irrigation, Agricultural climatology and Soil and nutrition management in agriculture and specialized courses based on Agroecology, Crop science, Plant breeding and Horticulture. The aim of study and courses being taught to students designed based on student Grade. We have three Grade of study in Department of Plant Production at University of Torbat Heydarieh. Associate of Science (ASc.), Integrated Bachelor of Science (BSc.) and Master of Science (MSc.).
The teaching of courses related to Agroecology, focuses on the ecological sustainability of plant production and provides information on questions relating to the environment and natural resources, as well as the ecological foundation of biodiversity in agriculture. The teaching is especially aimed at students of agriculture and food technology, but also at students of environmental management as well as other students interested in the environmental issues of agriculture. Agroecology studies the structure and functioning of field ecosystems, the regional ecology of agriculture and the ecological sustainability of the agricultural and horticultural product systems, especially food systems, in their social, economic and cultural context. The development of production systems, such as organic farming, is a close field of application for Agroecology. Ongoing research includes the biodiversity of cultivated environments, recycling of nutrients in the system of production and consumption, and ecological production methods.
Plant Breeding is a form of applied genetics. Plant Breeding aims to increase the exploitability of plants and, on the other hand, offers an opportunity to respond rapidly to changing climate and opinion environments. The teaching includes the basics of plant genetics and application of population genetic methods in breeding. Utilisation of modern biotechnical and DNA-level methods is also within the sphere of Plant Breeding. The aim of the teaching of Plant Breeding course is to give the students the competence to work as a breeder and researcher both in Iran and abroad, so the studies include practical laboratory and summer courses as well as practical placement periods in breeding plants.
People need food and energy and animals need feed. In courses related to crop science we investigate how the production of these could be improved and optimised. Environment restricts growth and thus yield of crops. Following climate change the effect of environment on crops will change. We investigate how the crops react to environment physiologically and ecologically and try to find means to decrease or avoid the environmental restrictions to crop growth. The adaptation of crops to climate change can be predicted by growth models. Sustainable management practices guarantee the continuation of crop production in the future. The quality of the yield is substantial as it comes to the end-use of the raw material. For example, the quality of bakery products, beer and vegetable oils as well as the can be affected through crops. The yield and the quality of the crop depends on the genotype, environment and management practice and their interaction. By understanding these effects we can optimize the yield and the quality sustainably. By interacting with the breeders and industry we improve the crops and management practices towards new challenges.
In Horticulture courses, students can specialize in issues pertaining to the production of fruits and berries, vegetables and ornamental plants. The focus of the teaching is specifically on the biology of horticultural plants and its significance in the production and use of the plants. Alternatively, students can choose studies focusing on green area development, which emphasize plants used in landscaping, their characteristics and use. Our aim is to educate experts with wide-ranging competence in the field of horticulture, who are well-versed in gathering, processing, analyzing and evaluating information. Studies in botany, plant physiology, soil sciences, genetics, plant pathology and molecular biology are essential for biologically-oriented students. Studies in Horticulture can also be supported with studies in economics, food sciences, technology and environmental protection. Our teaching is based on research that is especially focused on the basic issues of horticultural plant physiology and the development of production technology both in the open and in greenhouses. We study, for example, the development of the flower in ornamental plants, regulation of flowering and formation of yield in pomegranate and pistachios.

The purpose of this specialization is to build student expertise in the science, policy, and management of plant production and it’s sub-sections. We are here to provide high-quality teaching, research and community service in order to play a significant role in the advancement of the agricultural sciences as the basis for prosperity of the peoples of Iran, Middle East and the World.
